FAQ

General FAQ

Where is the office located?
I am located within Modern Work (8790 F Street) off of 84th and F. If you are a long-term Midwesterner you may know this as the old Pamida Warehouse. My office is on the Third Floor, so when you get here either climb the stairs or go down the corridor to the elevator. I will meet you at the sitting area at the top of the stairs; look for the red couch.
Parking?
There is visitor parking available on the East side of the building, but anywhere in the lot works!
Is the building accessible?
Yes! There are accessible parking spaces on the East side of the building and an elevator down the corridor.
What are your office hours?
My office hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.
What do I do to get started?
Well, let’s be frank. I am going to send you A LOT of paperwork to fill out, and then we will schedule an intake session.
How long are sessions typically?
I typically run sessions around 55 minutes.
How do you do payment/billing?

I am in network with most commercial insurances, so I am happy to bill them for you. If I just happen to be out of network, I will be happy to give you what is called a Super Bill so that you can file for your out-of-network benefits.

No insurance or don’t want to use your insurance, no problem. I accept self-pay clients as well. We can talk about the different plans I offer for self-pay clients.

For everyone, I require you keep a payment card (can be FSA/HSA) on file. The exception is if you have Medicaid.

Can I cancel an appointment? Do you have a cancellation policy?

Yes, my general rule is that I ask you to cancel 24 hours or more in advance. If you cancel the day of and can reschedule that week, we are also good. Otherwise I may charge a cancellation fee. (The exceptions are if you are on a plan or have Medicaid.)

Therapy FAQ

Who is your perfect client?
I really enjoy working with people who have experienced trauma and/or have an unwanted behavior such as substance use.
Who do you work with?
I work with individuals of all genders. I just ask that your age have two or more digits in it and you want to do individual therapy.
Are you LGBTQIA friendly?
Yes.
What can I expect in the first session?

I am going to ask you a lot of questions and take a lot of notes. In some ways, the first session is the complete opposite of what future sessions will look like. With intake, I want to get to know more about what brings you to see me, what happened to you, and what you want out of therapy. After the first session, I will put my laptop away and let you do the directing of our sessions.

Who benefits from therapy?

Therapy is for everyone.

Do you offer video or phone sessions?

I do offer video sessions (or telehealth) but not phone sessions. I want to see you.

Are you a Christian counselor?

I am a counselor who is a Christian. I work within your belief system, not mine. If your belief system includes Christianity, I am happy to incorporate some historically Christian spiritual practices. If your belief system is not Christianity, I am also happy to help you incorporate your spiritual practices. If you don’t want to incorporate any spiritual practices, then we won’t. No matter what you believe or practice, we will work off of that. Therapy is about you.

Questions About Me

How long have you been in practice?
I’ve been in practice since 2022. Prior to that, I did an assortment of things like processing insurance claims, doing title work on real property, and working Child Welfare here in Nebraska.
What are your strengths as a therapist?
I love to learn and be curious. I am always looking for ways to improve how I do therapy and am open to trying “weird” things. I also try to maintain curiosity with each of my clients. Also, you will likely hear me say, “I may be wrong” more than once, because, well, I am human and I could be wrong.
Have you been in therapy yourself?

Yes, because every weird therapist needs their own weird therapist. Also, I’m human, and I have things to work on, too.

What is your educational background?

I have a Bachelor’s of Art in Family Life and Counseling Ministry from Nebraska Christian College and a Master’s of Art in Counseling from Crown College. (Please scroll up and see my answer to “Are you a Christian Counselor?”)

Are you licensed?

Yes, in Nebraska, I am a Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner (LIMHP), Professional Counselor and Provisionally Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor (LADC). If you count, I have about 15 letters behind my name.

Do you take notes?

Yes, I do notes, but the only time you will see me take notes is when we are doing an Intake or a formal evaluation. Outside of that, I do my notes after our session.

Just Because FAQ

Is your furniture comfortable?
Yes, it is, and you have choices. You can sit on the couch, the glider, or an exercise ball. The floor is also available, but I would say the other options are more comfortable.
Do I have to lie on a couch?
You don’t have to, but you are always welcome to. Whatever feels comfortable to you.
Do I need to wear waterproof mascara?

That’s up to you. Either way, I have a mirror and several tissues.

Cats or Dogs?
Well, it depends on if you ask my cats (Oscar and Henry) or my dog (Sybil Glinda). They for sure have opinions of if cats or dogs are better. I, however, love them both.
