Trauma is not an event.
It is how a person reacts to the event (*The Trauma Foundation, n.d.).
Two people can experience the same event in very different ways.
How you experienced it is valid.
You may not remember a time before the trauma happened.
Causes and responses to trauma vary.
It could be the result of a one-time event.
Alternatively, it may result from something you experienced multiple times and maybe could not escape.
Trauma can be sneaky in how it comes to the surface.
For some people, trauma is disabling.
Response to trauma can vary.
It can cause you to feel alone or misunderstood.
You might stay on high alert, constantly looking around, fearing it is happening again.
Good things in your life may make you suspicious. It can cause forgetfulness and/or dissociation.
Unrelated situations associated with a smell, sound, sight, taste, or touch may trigger negative feelings and responses.
Therapy promotes healing from trauma.
Through therapy, you can
- Heal, even if your brain does not remember everything that happened.
- Reconnect to your body.
- Minimize the feelings of discomfort when you are experiencing something good.
- Change your life.
